Defiance County was founded April 7, 1845. Defiance was created by taking area from Williams, Henry and Paulding Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Defiance had a population of 38,087 people. This is a decrease of 2.55% since the last Census (which gave a population of 39,082 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Defiance represented 0.34% of the total population of Ohio.
