Nye County was founded February 16, 1864 and was created by taking area from EsmeraldaCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Nye had a population of 44,234 people. This is an increase of 36.17% since the last Census (which gave a population of 32,485 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Nye represented 1.63% of the total population of Nevada, making it the state's 6th most populous county (out of 17 counties).
