Lyon County is one of the original counties of Nevada and was founded November 25, 1861.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Lyon had a population of 52,641 people. This is an increase of 52.58% since the last Census (which gave a population of 34,501 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Lyon represented 1.73% of the total population of Nevada, making it the state's 5th most populous county (out of 17 counties).
