The community of Gallup is the Seat for McKinley County.

McKinley County was founded in 1899 and was created by taking area from BernalilloCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> McKinley had a population of 70,513 people. This is a decrease of 5.73% since the last Census (which gave a population of 74,798 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, McKinley represented 4.11% of the total population of New Mexico, making it the state's 6th most populous county (out of 33 counties).
