Los Alamos County was founded in 1949. Los Alamos was created by taking area from Sandoval and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Los Alamos had a population of 18,074 people. This is a decrease of 1.47% since the last Census (which gave a population of 18,343 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Los Alamos represented 1.01% of the total population of New Mexico, making it the state's 20th most populous county (out of 33 counties).
