DeBaca County was founded in 1917. DeBaca was created by taking area from Chaves and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> DeBaca had a population of 1,819 people. This is a decrease of 18.79% since the last Census (which gave a population of 2,240 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, DeBaca represented 0.12% of the total population of New Mexico, making it the state's 32nd most populous county (out of 33 counties).
