Cibola County was founded in 1981 and was created by taking area from ValenciaCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Cibola had a population of 27,036 people. This is an increase of 5.63% since the last Census (which gave a population of 25,595 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Cibola represented 1.41% of the total population of New Mexico, making it the state's 17th most populous county (out of 33 counties).
