Catron County was founded in 1921 and was created by taking area from SocorroCounty.
From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Catron had a population of 3,443 people. This is a decrease of 2.82% since the last Census (which gave a population of 3,543 people in 2000).
At the time of the 2000 Census, Catron represented 0.19% of the total population of New Mexico, making it the state's 31st most populous county (out of 33 counties).
