Surry County was founded in 1771 and was created by taking area from Rowan County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Surry had a population of 71,783 people. This is a decrease of 2.7% since the last Census (which gave a population of 73,775 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Surry represented 0.77% of the total population of North Carolina.
