Gates County was founded in 1779. Gates was created by taking area from Chowan, and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Gates had a population of 11,768 people. This is an increase of 11.91% since the last Census (which gave a population of 10,516 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Gates represented 0.13% of the total population of North Carolina, making it the state's 94th most populous county (out of 100 counties).
