Alexander County was founded in 1847. Alexander was created by taking area from Caldwell, and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Alexander had a population of 36,777 people. This is an increase of 9.45% since the last Census (which gave a population of 33,603 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Alexander represented 0.42% of the total population of North Carolina, making it the state's 65th most populous county (out of 100 counties).
