Hill County was founded in 1912 and was created by taking area from Chouteau County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Hill had a population of 16,484 people. This is an increase of 2.05% since the last Census (which gave a population of 16,153 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Hill represented 1.63% of the total population of Montana.
