Madison County was founded in 1785 and was created by taking area from LincolnCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Madison had a population of 83,258 people. This is an increase of 17.48% since the last Census (which gave a population of 70,872 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Madison represented 1.75% of the total population of Kentucky, making it the state's 10th most populous county (out of 120 counties).
