Laurel County was founded in 1825. Laurel was created by taking area from Rockcastle, , and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Laurel had a population of 57,749 people. This is an increase of 9.55% since the last Census (which gave a population of 52,715 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Laurel represented 1.3% of the total population of Kentucky, making it the state's 15th most populous county (out of 120 counties).
