Fayette County is one of the original counties of Kentucky and was founded in 1780.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Fayette had a population of 296,545 people. This is an increase of 13.83% since the last Census (which gave a population of 260,512 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Fayette represented 6.45% of the total population of Kentucky, making it the state's 2nd most populous county (out of 120 counties).
