Union County was founded January 5, 1821. Union was created by taking area from Fayette, Franklin and Wayne Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Union had a population of 7,054 people. This is a decrease of 6.41% since the last Census (which gave a population of 7,537 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Union represented 0.12% of the total population of Indiana.
