Lake County was founded January 28, 1837. Lake was created by taking area from Newton and Porter Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Lake had a population of 485,493 people. This is a decrease of 2.11% since the last Census (which gave a population of 495,947 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Lake represented 7.65% of the total population of Indiana.
