Lawrence County was founded in 1821. Lawrence was created by taking area from Crawford and Edwards Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Lawrence had a population of 15,665 people. This is a decrease of 6.94% since the last Census (which gave a population of 16,833 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Lawrence represented 0.13% of the total population of Illinois.
