Toombs County was founded in 1905. Toombs was created by taking area from Emanuel, and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Toombs had a population of 27,959 people. This is an increase of 7.26% since the last Census (which gave a population of 26,067 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Toombs represented 0.32% of the total population of Georgia, making it the state's 57th most populous county (out of 159 counties).
