Putnam County was founded in 1807 and was created by taking area from BaldwinCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Putnam had a population of 20,495 people. This is an increase of 8.95% since the last Census (which gave a population of 18,812 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Putnam represented 0.23% of the total population of Georgia, making it the state's 88th most populous county (out of 159 counties).
