Meriwether County was founded in 1827 and was created by taking area from Troup County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Meriwether had a population of 21,167 people. This is a decrease of 2.98% since the last Census (which gave a population of 21,818 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Meriwether represented 0.23% of the total population of Georgia.
