The community of Athens is the Seat for Clarke County.

Clarke County was founded in 1801 and was created by taking area from Jackson County.

From the Census Estimates for 2019, <1> Clarke had a population of 128,238 people. This is an increase of 9.87% since the last Census (which gave a population of 116,714 people in 2010).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Clarke represented 1.2% of the total population of Georgia.
