The community of Brooksville is the Seat for Hernando County.

Hernando County was founded February 24, 1843 and was created by taking area from AlachuaCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Hernando had a population of 171,233 people. This is an increase of 30.91% since the last Census (which gave a population of 130,802 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Hernando represented 0.82% of the total population of Florida, making it the state's 28th most populous county (out of 67 counties).
