Greenlee County was founded in 1909 and was created by taking area from GrahamCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Greenlee had a population of 8,041 people. This is a decrease of 5.92% since the last Census (which gave a population of 8,547 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Greenlee represented 0.17% of the total population of Arizona, making it the state's 15th most populous county (out of 15 counties).
