Although we found mention of Sipsey during our research, we have little information about it.<1> Given the context of how Sipsey was mentioned, we believe that it was a community rather than some type of landmark. We have done a cursory search and if it's a community, we haven't been able to find any evidence that it still exists.

One piece of information that we would especially like to find is the location (ie- GPS coordinates) of Sipsey. If you can help us locate Sipsey, please Contact Us.

FIPS Codes
In the past, the federal government created a set of codes that are used to uniquely identify States, Counties and Populated Places (such as a community like Sipsey). These codes form the Federal Information Processing Standard. (specifically FIPS Document 55-3).

The State Code consists of two digits, the County Code consists of three digits and the Place Code consists of five digits. The County and Place Codes must be used together with the State Code to be truly unique.

For example, the following codes apply to the community of Sipsey:

- State Code:  01 (Alabama)

- State / County Code:  01 / 057 (Fayette County)

- State / Place Code:  01 / 70680

The FIPS Codes have been replaced by an ANSI standard and the GNIS Feature ID. Although obsolete, the FIPS Codes are still in use by some organizations.

For more information about the FIPS Codes, please visit our Misc Page for Sipsey.

Footnotes ...

<1>If we encounter the name of what might be a community, our methodology is to add that name to our Gazetteer. For example, we might find a sentence like "He went south past Sipsey and then turned west". While Sipsey could be some kind of landmark, we think that it's more likely to be a community. We've added Sipsey as a placeholder with the hope that we'll be able to add more information in the future.

Just as a reminder: Our definition of a community is rather broad and includes those places where several families lived and had a name which identified that place. The community might still exist or it might have existed for just a short period of time. Places of interest include buildings at a crossroad, families in a hollow or maybe the location of a way station. It also includes places like mines, lumber camps, ferry crossings, etc.

Also keep in mind that Sipsey could have been on the original document by mistake, misspelled, the original/alternate name of a community that we've listed elsewhere or was placed in the wrong county. Sometimes a post office or train station would have a different name than the community where it's located, so two names might be referring to the same community.

Just in case there has been confusion between counties, we found that there are two Alabama communities named Sipsey: This one is located in Fayette County and the other is located in Walker County. For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Sipsey.
