While we don't have a date for the founding of Mattoon, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1895.

At the time of the 2010 Census, Mattoon had a population of 438 people. This makes Mattoon the county's 32nd most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 438 people, the population of Mattoon decreased 6.01% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 466 people).

We originally found mention of Mattoon in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Mattoon was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Mattoon post office opened in 1895.

We also found Mattoon on a map titled Shell Oil Road Map for Wisconsin (1956).
