The community of Shelton is the Seat for Mason County.

Mason County was founded in 1854 and was created by taking area from KingCounty.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Mason had a population of 58,016 people. This is an increase of 17.43% since the last Census (which gave a population of 49,405 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Mason represented 0.84% of the total population of Washington, making it the state's 20th most populous county (out of 39 counties).
