The Commemorative Quarter for Vermont

Welcome to Brighton ...

So far, we found very little information about Brighton. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Brighton to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Brighton - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Brighton, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Brighton , we believe that it would have been located within present day Essex County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Brighton, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1849.

Time Zone: The area where Brighton was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

Brighton would have been located in the (802) area code.

Adding Brighton to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Brighton in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Brighton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Brighton post office opened in 1849.

We also found Brighton in the book titled Table of U.S. Post Offices in the United States (Jan. 1851).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Brighton, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Vermont's counties, including Essex, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
