Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Yankton had an population of 14,700 people. This is an increase of 1.7% since the 2010 Census (or an increase of 8.66% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Yankton had a population of 14,454 people (which is 64.42% of the total population of Yankton County). This makes Yankton the county's most populous community.

The population of Yankton represents 1.78% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 7th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 14,454 people, the population of Yankton increased 6.85% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 13,528 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Yankton was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Yankton post office opened in 1860.
