The town of Bison is located in Perkins County<1> and is the County Seat for Perkins County.


The location of Bison has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<2>


While we don't have a date for the founding of Bison, you might get a feel for it by knowing that during our research the earliest mention that we found (so far) was on a map dated 1937.

From the  Census Estimates for 2019, Bison has a population of 320 people<3> (see below for details).

Bison is 2,770 feet [844 m] above sea level.<4> In other words, the elevation of Bison is about ½ mile above sea level.

Time Zone: Bison lies in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Note: If you leave Bison and travel east, you will leave Mountain Time and cross into the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT).

Bison is within the boundaries of the (605) area code.

Population Details ...

Taken from the 2019 Census Estimates, Bison had an population of 320 people. This is a decrease of 3.9% since the 2010 Census (or a decrease of 14.21% since the 2000 Census).

At the time of the 2010 Census, Bison had a population of 333 people (which is 11.17% of the total population of Perkins County). This makes Bison the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Bison represents 0.04% of the total population of South Dakota (which has 814,180 people), making it the state's 198th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 333 people, the population of Bison decreased 10.72% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 373 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Bison was on a map titled Map of South Dakota (from Rand McNally, 1937).
