Welcome to Middlebury ...

So far, we found very little information about Middlebury. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Middlebury to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Middlebury - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Middlebury, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Middlebury , we believe that it would have been located within present day Summit County<2>.

The pronunciation of Middlebury: MIH-duhl-berg<3>

While we don't have a date for the founding of Middlebury, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1823.

Time Zone: The area where Middlebury was located is in the Eastern Time Zone (EST/EDT) and observes daylight saving time

If Middlebury still existed, it would have been in the (330) & (234)<4> area codes.

Communities Also Named Middlebury ...

While we believe that this Middlebury is located in Summit County, we know of another 2 Ohio communities named Middlebury. Those communities are located in the following counties: Delaware and Van Wert County.

Adding Middlebury to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Middlebury in the GNIS. For more information, see the Referenced GNIS Codes section on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Middlebury was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Middlebury post office opened in 1823.

We also found Middlebury in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Middlebury, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Ohio's counties, including Summit, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<3>The pronunciation we've provided is our attempt to give a phonetic pronunciation for Middlebury. While it might not be exactly right, hopefully it will be close. If we have it wrong or there's a better way to pronounce the name, please contact us through our Feedback Page.
<4>Area code (234) is an overlay for area code (330).
