Around Heathbell ...

Although we found mention of Heathbell during our research, we really don't have any information about it.<1> Given the context of how Heathbell was mentioned, we believe that it was a community rather than some type of landmark. We have done a cursory search and if it's a community, we haven't been able to find any evidence that it still exists.

Footnotes ...

<1>If we encounter the name of what might be a community, our methodology is to add that name to our Gazetteer. For example, we might find a sentence like "He went north past Heathbell and then turned west". While Heathbell could be some kind of landmark, we think that it's more likely to be a community. We've added Heathbell as a placeholder with the hope that we'll be able to add more information in the future.

Just as a reminder: Our definition of a community is rather broad and includes those places where several families lived and had a name which identified that place. The community might still exist or it might have existed for just a short period of time. Places of interest include buildings at a crossroad, families in a hollow or maybe the location of a way station. It also includes places like mines, lumber camps, ferry crossings, etc.

Also keep in mind that Heathbell could have been on the original document by mistake, misspelled, the original/alternate name of a community that we've listed elsewhere or was placed in the wrong . Sometimes a post office or train station would have a different name than the community where it's located, so two names might be referring to the same community.

Since confusion between is common, we searched and weren't able to find another Nova Scotia community named Heathbell.

<2>Unless noted otherwise, the population counts we use should be considered estimates. Our population values for Heathbell were taken from various sources and although they can be traced back to Statistics Canada (StatCan), they should not be considered official.

<3>Our distances are not driving distances, but are calculated as a 'point-to-point' distance that stretches from Heathbell. A straight line distance ignores things like rivers, canyons, lakes, et cetera - it's truly a line from Point A (ie- Heathbell) to Point B.

Our distance measurements begin at a specific point in Heathbell. The point that we are using is located at these GPS coordinates - Latitude: 45.6714, Longitude: -62.8431     [Map].

<4>The IATA and ICAO are organizations that, amongst other functions, provide identifying codes for airports. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is an airline trade organization. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is an agency of the United Nations. Although the codes are similar, be careful not to confuse them.

- Return to Citation

<5>On an airport-by-airport basis, an NFDC report typically includes a description of airport operations, contacts, the runway(s), and radio, navigation & weather frequencies. The National Flight Data Center (NFDC) is operated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with the purpose of collecting, validating and disseminating information about airports.

<6>When we are planning a trip (for example, to Heathbell), we usually look for the obvious: the choice of airlines that fly into the airport, the number of flights, the connections we have to make, which car rentals are available, etc. We also look for sights and attractions that we might find between any given airport and our destination - we do love exploring. We're willing to fly into a more distant airport if we can get the services and amenities that we like. Even though our choice of airport might be inconvenient to others, it usually gives us a better trip.
