From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Square Butte was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Square Butte post office opened in 1914.

We also found Square Butte on a map titled Shell Oil Map of Montana (1951).
