Welcome to Comet (aka 'High Ore') ...

So far, we found very little information about Comet. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Comet to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. If you can help us with Comet, please Contact Us.


Comet would have been located within present day Jefferson County<2>.



While we don't have a date for the founding of Comet, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1877.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Comet is 6,380 feet [1,945 m] above sea level.<3> In other words, the altitude of Comet is about 1¼ mile [or ~2 km] above sea level.

Time Zone: The area where Comet was located is in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

Comet would have been located in the (406) area code.

The community of Comet has also been called High Ore.

Adding Comet to Our Gazetteer ...

We originally found mention of Comet in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Comet was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<6>

From that list, the Comet post office opened in 1877.

We also found Comet in the book titled Business Atlas and Shippers' Guide (1895).
