At the time of the 2010 Census, Monticello had a population of 1,571 people (which is 12.15% of the total population of Lawrence County). This makes Monticello the county's most populous community.

The population of Monticello represents 0.05% of the population of Mississippi (which has 2,967,297 people), making it the state's 129th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 1,571 people, the population of Monticello decreased 8.98% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 1,726 people).

We originally found mention of Monticello in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Monticello was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Monticello post office opened in 1815.

We also found Monticello in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).
