At the time of the 2010 Census, Northfield had a population of 20,007 people (or 31.19% of the total population of Rice County). This makes Northfield the county's 2nd most populous community.

The population of Northfield represents 0.38% of the population of Minnesota (which has 5,303,925 people), making it the state's 55th most populous community.

With a 2010 count of 20,007 people, the population of Northfield increased 16.68% from the 2000 Census (which had a count of 17,147 people).

We originally found mention of Northfield in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Northfield was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>

From that list, the Northfield post office opened in 1856.

We also found Northfield in the book titled List of Post Offices in the United States (1870).
