At the time of the 2010 Census, Russell had a population of 4,506 people (which is 64.65% of the total population of Russell County). This makes Russell the county's most populous community.
The population of Russell represents 0.16% of the population of Kansas (which has 2,853,118 people), making it the state's 63rd most populous community.
With a 2010 count of 4,506 people, the population of Russell decreased 4.05% from the 2000 Census (with a count of 4,696 people).

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Russell was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<7>
From that list, the Russell post office opened in 1871.
