The Commemorative Quarter for Illinois

Welcome to Circleville ...

So far, we found very little information about Circleville. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Circleville to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Circleville - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Circleville, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Circleville , we believe that it would have been located within present day Tazewell County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Circleville, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1838.

Time Zone: The area where Circleville was located is in the Central Time Zone (CST/CDT) and observes daylight saving time

Communities Also Named Circleville ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are 12 communities that are also named Circleville - they are located in Indiana (2), Kansas, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas (2), Utah, Virginia and West Virginia.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Circleville.

Adding Circleville to Our Gazetteer ...

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Circleville was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Circleville post office opened in 1838.

We also found Circleville in the book titled U.S. Post Offices (Oct. 1846).

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Circleville, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Illinois' counties, including Tazewell, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
