Welcome to Red Mountain ...

So far, we found very little information about Red Mountain. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

We've added Red Mountain to our Gazetteer with the hope that we can develop more information. We would especially like to find the location of Red Mountain - knowing its coordinates, we can explore things like its relationship to neighboring communities, nearby cemeteries, etc. If you can help us with Red Mountain, please Contact Us.

While we don't have the exact location of Red Mountain , we believe that it would have been located within present day Gunnison County<2>.

While we don't have a date for the founding of Red Mountain, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1880.

A typical abbreviation for Red Mountain: Red Mtn. (or less commonly used: Red Mntn.)

Time Zone: The area where Red Mountain was located is in the Mountain Time Zone (MST/MDT) and observes daylight saving time

If Red Mountain still existed, it would have been in the (970) area code.

Communities Also Named Red Mountain ...

Using our Gazetteer, we found that there are two Colorado communities named Red Mountain: This one is located in Gunnison County and the other is located in Ouray County.

Beyond Colorado, there are 4 communities that are also named Red Mountain - they are located in California, Montana and North Carolina.

For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Red Mountain.

Adding Red Mountain to Our Gazetteer ...

As we work on our Gazetteer, we occasionally find mention of a community that is new to us. When we find such a community, we add it to our Gazetteer with the hope of adding more information in the future.

The earliest source we've referenced which mentioned Red Mountain was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<3>

From that list, the Red Mountain post office opened in 1880.

Footnotes ...

<1>We use the term 'Historic' broadly and it generally means that the community no longer exists. However, it can also mean that the community might still exist, but was significantly larger or had a more 'official' existence in the past than it does now. Unfortunately our sources of data have proven to be unreliable. If you can provide us with more specific information about Red Mountain, please let us know so that we can improve our accuracy.
<2>If you're interested in how the shape of Colorado's counties, including Gunnison, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
