Census-to-Census Observations ...

Introduction ...

When the Census Bureau takes a census count (or enumeration) for Edwardsville, they start by specifying the boundaries of the area to be counted. This area (or sampling area) is a polygon and its shape can be quite complex - it may or may not match the geographical boundaries of Edwardsville. It's important to note that from one Census to the next, the shape and location of the polygon can change.

    • Although we don't have specific information about the shape of the polygon for Edwardsville or how it changed has over time, there is some information that can give us some hints.
    • If you need precision or details about the methodology of the Census, you should visit the U.S. Census Bureau for a definitive answer.

Area ...

The area (or polygon) given for the 2010 Census matches that given for the 2000 Census. It's likely that the same polygon was used for the two censuses.

Location ...

While generally coinciding with the GPS location (latitude/longitude) of Edwardsville, the latitude and longitude given by the Census Bureau actually indicates the GPS location of the polygon for Edwardsville.

    • For the 2010 Census, the location was given as:
    • Lat:   31.417313°   (or 31°25'2" N)
    • Lon:   -86.077189°   (or -86°4'37" W)
    • For the 2000 Census, the location given was:
    • Lat:   31.417263°   (or 31°25'2" N)
    • Lon:   -86.077442°   (or -86°4'38" W)
    • The difference indicates that the U.S. Census Bureau moved the location of the polygon for the 2010 Census 80.8 feet to the east<5> of the location that was used in the 2000 Census.

Footnotes ...

<1>If we encounter the name of what might be a community, our methodology is to add that name to our Gazetteer. For example, we might find a sentence like "He went north past Edwardsville and then turned west". While Edwardsville could be some kind of landmark, we think that it's more likely to be a community. We've added Edwardsville as a placeholder with the hope that we'll be able to add more information in the future.

Just as a reminder: Our definition of a community is rather broad and includes those places (or areas) where several families lived and had a name which identified that place. For example, you might hear somebody say that they are going over to Mile's to see Pete ... Mile's is just a gas station and a couple of homes at the crossroads. While it might not be on the map, everybody in the area knows it by that name.

Places of interest include buildings at a crossroad, several families clustered in a hollow or maybe the location of a way station. It also includes places like mines, lumber camps, ferry crossings, etc. The community might still exist, is now gone or only existed for just a short period of time.

Also keep in mind that Edwardsville could have been on the original document by mistake, misspelled, the original/alternate name of a community that we've listed elsewhere or was placed in the wrong county. Sometimes a post office or train station would have a different name than the community where it's located, so two names might be referring to the same community - we're working to straighten it all out.

Just in case there has been confusion between counties, we found that there are 2 Alabama communities also named Edwardsville. While this community is located in Coffee County, the others are located in the following counties: Cleburne and Etowah. For more information, see our Tidbits & Trivia Page for Edwardsville.
<2>While we're fans and frequent users of TripAdvisor, you should know that we're also members of the TripAdvisor affiliate program.
<3>The location has been supplied by the Geographic Names Information System - which is maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). While these values should be definitive, we found that accuracy can vary and you should double-check the location if accuracy is required.
<4>If you're interested in how the shape of Alabama's counties, including Coffee, have changed over time, we recommend the Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
<5>The calculated bearing (or angle) to the 2010 Census location is 283 degrees and a distance of 80.8 feet.
