Russell County was founded in 1832. Russell was created by taking area from Montgomery and Counties.

From the Census Estimates for 2009, <1> Russell had a population of 50,846 people. This is an increase of 2.19% since the last Census (which gave a population of 49,756 people in 2000).

At the time of the 2000 Census, Russell represented 1.12% of the total population of Alabama, making it the state's 25th most populous county (out of 67 counties).
