Welcome to Afognak ...

So far, we found very little information about Afognak. The little that we've found leads us believe that the community is historic.<1>

The town of Afognak was located on Afognak Bay, which is on the southwest coast of Afognak Island.


The location of Afognak has been provided by the Geographic Names Information System (ie- the GNIS).<2>


While we don't have a date for the founding of Afognak, you might consider that their post office opened  in 1888.

While the community is gone, the present day location for Afognak is 90 feet [27 m] above sea level.<3>.

Time Zone: The area where Afognak was located is in the Alaskan Time Zone (AKST/AKDT) and observes daylight saving time

If Afognak still existed, it would have been in the (907) area code.

We originally found mention of Afognak in both the FIPS-55 and the GNIS. For more information, see the FIPS and GNIS Codes sections on our Miscellaneous Page.

From our notes, the earliest published mention we've found for Afognak was in the document titled List of Post Offices from Cameron Blevins and Richard Helbock.<5>

From that list, the Afognak post office opened in 1888.

We also found Afognak on a map titled Rand McNally Map of Alaska (1897).
